We have now had sufficient experience with the Continental Phantom in its final form to enable us to compare its performance with that of the standard car. Attached are curves which indicate the marked improvement which has been made, and we feel we can with advantage expand the information contained in these curves verbally. In the first place it will be observed that though 10 M.P.H. has been added to the maximum speed of the car, its top gear performance, even at the very lowest speeds has also been improved. In our report Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RnL/LG6. 9.27 on the tests on Brooklands, it will be noted that on top gear below 50 m.p.h. we only obtained acceleration equal to that of a standard car. Since then we have lightened the complete car by 2 cwts. and reverted to the standard camshaft, both of which have improved our low speed performance, so that now we have a very fast car actually better at top gear hill climbing and acceleration than the std. touring car model. However, we believe the most striking improvement has been effected in the performance of the car when the indirect gears are used. Using the figures taken on Brooklands and given in the report previously mentioned, we find that from a standing start using the gearbox, the Continental Phantom will lead the standard car by 183 yds. at the half mile and 350 yds. at the... | ||
