varies as far as we can see due to the oil being squeezed
out. We are sending a suggestion for giving a coarser thread
so that there may be a better chance of keeping the oil in on
account of the longer surface, and also as it seems to us there
may be a better chance of polishing the worm. We should be
glad of your remarks on this suggestion.

We should also be glad if you would say whether you
think there would be an advantage in returning to the split
nut, the idea being that they can scrape the nut threads to a
more perfect bedding.

We also make some suggestions for holes leading the
oil into the worm more effectively but we are not prepared
to say that this is going to be much help. As far as we can
see the only direction in which improvement can come is in
efficiency of the worm and nut and all that we can probably
do is to help you to obtain this efficiency.

It may be pointed out that the proportions and part-
iculars of our ø worm and nut are very similar to those of the
Hispano, of which you sent us a drawing. We believe it has
been pointed out already that the very flexible spring on
the Hispano side steering tube might have quite a lot to do
with the latter retaining its oil film better than ours does.
