HIDES PER CAR SET.

Further to my memo FS{F. Steele}/Cr{Mr Cra???ster / Mr Chichester}1 4/VB. 27.9.57., I have done quite a lot of investigation and have contacted JPB who came down to the Shop and made some recommendations.

Those recommendations were that we may find it more economical if we cut all our big parts from two or three hides, and the smaller parts from others, this depends to a great extent on the colours matching, which has been one of our difficulties, the other was that we might let some of the marks pass which we normally reject, also to cut piping from scrap, which means joining.

We have tried this out on eight car sets and selected sizes of hide. On the eight sets we averaged 344 ft. per car which against our original estimate of 425 sq. ft. shows a saving of 82 sq. ft per car, which at 2/5d per sq. ft shows a saving of £9 18s 2d.

In order to be able to apply this consistantly it will be necessary to get Conolly's to agree to the following:-

1) Size of hides.

2) Colour matching to be more consistant.

As regards sizes we would like Conolly's to supply one hide per car set of 52 sq. ft or more, and six hides of 45 sq. ft or under 2 ft up or down respectively. The ideal would be seven hides only on each pole and the sizes as stated.

In the joining up of the piping to which JPB has agreed, it will cost approx. 1 hour actual extra for the cutting and joining.
