TO R.J. FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to C.J.R. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} MOTOR SHOW IMPRESSIONS. With reference to the Motor Show the impression I have that many of the chassis shewn (as so often is the case) had not been tested. Some were impossible to purchase, such as the Alfa Romeo, being a chassis which had never run at all. There were also many cases of extreme neatness, sacrificing practical utility, an instance being the Itala, which had the ignition plugs in the same chamber as the valve mechanism, and would get smothered with oil. It is not good for sparking plugs or ignition wires. So that many of the remarks applying to clean designs are absolutely misleading, because when they put on the additional parts and render them accessible and practical, the appearance will be quite different. (many were incomplete!) I am very pleased that we are able to get our novelties tested and established before the Show, as it should make it easier for wise people to buy from us. The only chassis which seemed to have novelties, and had been tested, was the Austro-Daimler, which we are endeavouring to obtain. Regarding our Phantom I am very anxious about three items:- (1) To fit hydraulic shock dampers. (2) To lighten the chassis. (3) To render the induction system less dependent on heat. Other features are treated with in another memo., and are embodied in the model to be known as EAC. 8. | ||
