SECRET To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re "SS{S. Smith}" Chassis. Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} In the absence of Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}, who I am sorry to hear is away unwell, I am writing to you regarding the position of 21-EX. You will remember that in your memor. to R.{Sir Henry Royce}, Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG24.1.29 you said: "We are endeavouring to complete 21-EX with all the modifications which have been instructed which we hope will make this car a model of the first cars the Works will produce. As soon as the car is ready it will be tried by the various officials in England and then sent to Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, afterwards going to Chateauroux for road test. We expect to have this car in France about the secondweek in February." I should be glad to know how this matter now stands, i.e. how soon the car will be completed and ready for the tests. C. and I have discussed the matter here, and it seems to us that the position really is that on the recommendation of certain officials the Board agreed to the "SS{S. Smith}" being put into production and, therefore, it is very important that the same officials should collectively agree and pass the car that is to be a model of the first ones which the Works will actually produce. As to whether they can do this in England or not I do not know and am prepared to accept the advice of the officials concerned. PN{Mr Northey}, who participated in the first matter is, as I think you know, in the South of France and has I believe already more or less arranged to join you at Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, so that his part of it could be dealt with then. I understand CWB is coming to Derby to-night about other matters, and I have asked him to take the opportunity of having a word with you on the subject, and I think it would be quite a good idea if you would get EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} and Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} along so that all four of you can discuss the matter together and agree the best way of dealing with it.
