CAR NO. 62-AU - MOY.

[Typed body]
This car was re-tested on the 20th March after new springs had been fitted at Cricklewood as supplied by "W" in accordance with final weights of car, and revised seating accommodation. At the same time, a spring drive (old pattern) coupling was fitted to overcome the transmission groan trouble.

As regards the springing, this was a very decided improvement and the car rode very comfortably and was completely satisfactory as regards springing when the shock absorbers had been correctly adjusted.

At the commencement of the trial, there appeared to be no improvement whatever as regards the transmission groan at 30 m.p.h. although the one previously experienced at 20 m.p.h. was practically eliminated.

[Handwritten in margin: whilst] However, after stopping the car and adjusting the shock absorbers which were found to be practically slack and restarting, a very decided improvement was observed whilst the car was driven under ordinary conditions into London. It was found that the transmission groan even at 30 m.p.h. was very much improved.

The fact of this improvement coinciding with the tightening of the shock absorbers is though to be only a coincidence, and it is thought that [crossed out: it is] more probable that previous to this stop the spring drive coupling was not working absolutely freely and that after it had come into full action for some reason.

The car has been sent to Messrs. Barker for finishing as it was not possible to pursue the matter further on this occasion, but it will be retested when finally completed and the influence of the degree of tightening of the shock absorbers on the transmission groan will be established or otherwise.
