7th October, 1936.

For the attention of Mr. Hardy.

Dear Sirs,

Further to your letter of the 2nd instant, and our acknowledgment of the same dated the 5th instant, we have now examined these rollers and have gone into the matter as thoroughly as possible.

As regards the grinding allowance, we have established that our Works mistakenly made these rollers on the assumption that the drawing which was given to them did not allow any grinding allowance on, so that the rollers had twice the amount of grinding allowance that was intended.

We have taken this matter up with the Works, and we think that such an error will not occur in future, and would ask you to accept our apologies for this.

As regards the depth of casing on the half roller you sent us, we are quite at a loss to explain this as very rigid control is exercised here on our case hardening plant, and every single box contains a test piece which is broken to show the depth of case before the rollers are released for further operations.
