Deutzmotoren A.G. On 7th of June a visit was made to the Deutzmotoren A.G. near Cologne. This is a very large concern manufacturing Deutze diesel engines of all sizes, small stationary engines for lighting plants, road transport engines from 60 to 170 B.H.P, marine engines of all sizes and large stationary engines for power plants. The factory is old fashioned, and in spite of the large quantity of work being turned out there is no serious attempt at mass production. They do all their own castings, and in another factory all their stampings and forgings for connecting rods, crankshafts etc. They have a museum in which representative engines are kept, going right back to the original atmospheric gas engine made in 1864. Approximately 90% of the commercial vehicles in Germany are Diesel engine equipped and Deutze have a large share of them. The commercial vehicle engines have a C.I. crankcase and cylinder block in one unit, using wet cylinder liners and a separate head for each cylinder. They make their own fuel injection pumps. The equipment here was not particularly uptodate. | ||
