RE 40/50 H.P. REAR SHOCK DAMPERS. X.3461

Would you kindly note that Mr. Royce has considered the information you have sent concerning the proposed rear shock damper for the chassis, in which the variation of load with movement is given, and also your proposed alternative.

Mr. Royce does not wish the work on the original scheme to be stopped in any way, and would like the friction plates to be arranged in progressive steps, as at first suggested, since it reproduces the action of the Truffault shock absorber, which is giving satisfaction on the chassis. This action, it is thought, damps the end of the rebound effectively, although it gives a free return from the first deflection of the road springs.

The alternative which you propose, it is thought at the present moment should be left for consideration at a later date, since the present scheme is satisfactory in action, as exemplified by the Truffault, and there is no time to reconsider the whole job if these shock dampers are to be produced for the 40/50 H.P. chassis, and applied to the whole of our post-bellum chassis.

Would you kindly therefore put the friction plates in hand for the original design, to your N. scheme 65 with equal steps of progression in the friction load, as shown by the top scheme on the blue print submitted.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
