C O P Y. Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}10/JH. 19th September, 1940. NOTES ON TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH Mr. O.{Mr Oldham} BAIRD OF THE NAVAL ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT SPA HOTEL, BATH. --------------------------------- re TYPE BD.{Mr Berend} Naval Gun. MOUNTINGS. It is intended not to use any of the Oerlikon mountings. An order has been placed with the L.M. & S.R. by the Naval Authorities for 530 non elevating mountings to our design WPL.124 and WPL.127. Originally 25 Oerlikon mountings were said to be available, but later the figure of 36 was quoted. We have 3 of which one has been used, but this used mounting is not damaged and can still be used to carry the original Oerlikon gun. The naval authorities expected the delivery of the first mounting last week-end and 2 more mountings by this week-end. These three mountings will be fitted with the design of shield to WPL.136 by the L.M. & S.R. made in mild steel. The design of the shield will be finalised after the 2nd gun has been sent to H.M.S. Excellent and Lt. Cdr.{W. J. Chandler - Chief Clerk} Young has had an opportunity of criticising it. With the design as finalised the mild steel will be replaced by bullet proof material and we agree that we will then send to Mr. Baird a tracing of the approved design of armour shields. OFFICIAL ORDERS. Mr. Baird asked what official orders we have received and we pointed out that we were in no position to state. He agreed to ascertain the true situation and would see that official orders were sent to cover the following:- (a) Design and experimental development of the adaptation of the type BD.{Mr Berend} gun to the Oerlikon type 3 SLa mounting with ammunition tray and armour shields. (b) Design and experimental development work in connection with the non elevating mounting with ammunition tray and shields. Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
