X.3503. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., 15, Broad St.{Capt. P. R. Strong}, NEW YORK. Sept. 4th 1919. Oy7-F4/-/19. Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} from Oy. Copies E, Jcr, and EWC. X.3484. RE PRESSURE SYSTEM. 1. I enclose herewith copy of a letter to Mr.Schuette, referring to the Vacuum system on Mr. Henderson's car, and copy of Mr. Schuette's original letter, to which this is a reply. 2. Trouble is met with in leakage through worn release valves on the old pressure system, and through release valves which have been botched up by unskilled drivers. We have not yet received new release valves from England, in fact the situation as to the supply of spare parts from England has been in general unsatisfactory. (I am writing you further about this shortly). 3. You will notice that Mr. Schuette complains about the pressure system on this car, 58-NA{Mr Nadin}, which has the experimental air pump on the governor casing. This air pump has never given satisfaction, because the cylinder casting is too flimsy, and the bore becomes distorted in tightening the release valve nut. Furthermore, the hexagon on this nut is too thin to stand up to the spanner load, and the hexagon soon wears away. A considerable increase in wall thickness, and in the stiffness of the release valve nut, and generally an increased "cobbiness" in the parts of this pump is most desirable, as otherwise we will have continual trouble with these pumps in the hands of the only type of driver or mechanic which it is possible to obtain in the United States. 4. Will you be able to do anything to strengthen this part on cars sent over here. OY. | ||
