“AUTO.” KEY-MAP TO THE PRINCIPAL SOURCES OF PETROL.—The total consumption of petrol in England last year was about 80,000,000 gallons, and more than half of this was shipped via the “Shell” route from Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. When the ever-increasing internal consumption of liquid fuel in rich oil-bearing countries like America, Russia, and Roumania is borne in mind, the isolation of Britain, which is so clearly illustrated in the above map, should give rise to very serious reflection. Unless new fields of great natural richness are discovered in convenient localities, or satisfactory means are found for the synthesis of petrol from heavy oils on a commercial scale, it is apparent that the demand, at its present rate of increase, must inevitably cause a continuance of the rise in the price of petrol on the English market. Transport is obviously a governing factor in the situation, and the construction of tank steamers in adequate numbers is as important as the opening up of new wells.
