5 mins. BOILING TEST.

This was carried out with the outlet water temp. at 105°C. and engine throttled to 430 BHP. at 2100 r.p.m.

RPM. BHP. Water. In. Out. Oil. In. Out.
2100 430 95°C 105°C. 58°C 67°C.

WATER PUMP DELIVERY TEST (30 mins.

Delivery was measured with water outlet press. of at least 2 lbs/in², engine r.p.m. at 2100 and water inlet temp. 75°C.

RPM. WATER OUTLET PRESS. SUCTION DEPRN. WATER In. Out. GALS/MIN.
2100 3.0 lbs/in² 4 lbs/in² 75°C 85°C 54.6
(full
throttle)
for 30 minutes.

MINIMUM WATER CIRCULATING SPEED.

Water continued to circulate up to an extra head resistance of 2 feet on the outlet at a minimum of 550 r.p.m.

SPARKING PLUGS.

We have had trouble with the sparking plugs misfiring and pre-igniting both in the inlet and exhaust sides. The plugs used were K.L.G. F.12 and nine had to be exchanged during 90 hours running.

VALVE TAPPET CLEARANCE.

At the end of each 10 hour run we found that on some valves, inlet and exhaust, the clearances had been taken up to various degrees during running either by eroded valve seats or stretching valves. We are not prepared to say which yet but investigation will follow the dismantling of the engine.

A chart of clearances taken up after each 10 hours is attached.
