As stated, we will at the first opportunity obtain on this lengthened motor curves of the longitudinal magnetic pull with frictional effects balanced out for different amounts of teazer current. The present state of affairs that as units are required for new chassis almost as soon as they are made, it is very difficult to get in much work of this kind and our observations have consisted mainly of observation in position on the chassis. Provided we can view the mutual functioning of pinion (as we have been able to satisfactorily to do by means of an inspection hole put in the crankcase for the purpose) we can obtain more directly ideas of the necessary modifications. The various reports of observations on the action of S.S. systems which we have made have been obtained in this way. Now, however, it is being suggested and being considered that we should have a rig for further work on this starter as we cannot have the hole in the crankcase on every chassis.

We have from time to time compared this S.S. starter with the Bosch. The big difference in operation is entirely due to the fact that the space in which the Bosch spring works is filled with a very viscous oil. This enables the armature to come out and draw back relatively slowly without thumping. We have now removed this oil and the Bosch thumps in and out
