Wheels and Tires.
===================

(See copy of cable attached)

On June 19 we visited Dunlops and discussed wheels and tires with particular reference to sale in America with Messrs. Paull, Bond and Healey of the English Dunlop Co. and Mr. Collyer of the American Dunlop Co.

As a result of this we make the following recommendations:-

(1) To accept chassis either of the whole 200 order, or say the first 100 thereof, with present standard 20 x 7 wellbase wheels, with or without tires as may be found most economical. (But to make careful tests before changing from Dunlop tires.)

(2) To ask R.R.Ltd. to test experimentally (with a view to adoption as soon as possible) 19 x 7 wellbase tires of various makes on a wellbase rim 4" wide instead of the present rim which is 3.750 between flanges.

Dunlops will give all possible assistance in the way of supplying wheels and tires.

The reasons for these recommendations are rather complex and some of them highly technical, but in summary they are:-

(1) (a) The 19 x 7 straight side tires supplied for experiment show obviously inferior results as to steering.

(b) Present 20 x 7 Dunlops with "silent tread" are known to be satisfactory. Tire noise associated with earlier Dunlops does not exist. Mileage, riding and steering are good.

(c) Lincoln has led the way in the wellbase in America using 20 x 7 and now developing 19 x 7, and we should not be too far behind.

(d) Wellbase wheels and tires inherently better and safer and emphasize European origin.
