Cause and proposed solution for piston rattles.

I telegraphed to you yesterday that we had this particular matter in hand which has only lately come to light. I, too, am distressed to hear of this particular phenomenon, and look upon it with seriousness, and think it should be cured as quickly as possible. It is probably caused through light load running, causing lubrication to enter the cylinders, and then this is roasted into carbon round the top of the pistons above the rings. I understand it has been rendered harmless by turning the piston with greater clearance above the ring. The additional rings which we have tried for this purpose can be put in the existing pistons, and in all cases when removing the cylinders to clean the carbon, modifications to the rings or the pistons should be made.
