COPY. X4063 OyS- G25421. April 25, 1921. Mr.Claude Johnson, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Ltd., London, England. Attention. Works Committee. Dear Sir, Re Brake Brackets on Rear Axle. --------------------------------- X4063 We have received a completed standardisation sheet for fixing the brake brackets on the rear axle with solder instead of brazing, and we wish to advise you that we are not taking any action on this matter until we receive further advices from you, because of a breakage which occurred on 4-EX and which was reported to Mr.Hives on March 17th. On 4-EX the brake brackets were attached without the use of brazing or solder, and following our run to Cleveland at Christmas time we found that one of the brake brackets had come loose and was only attached by a single screw, the other three having broken short off under the head. Since the brazing which we use at present has considerable strength, whereas solder would have little or none, we consider that the alteration proposed by Derby would seriously weaken the attachment of the brake bracket to the rear axle. We should like to receive your further advices on this matter, assuring us that this breakage on 4-EX has been taken account of and that it will be perfectly safe to attach the brackets with solder. Yours truly, ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA INC. (Sgd.) Per M.Olley. MO/G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Cc. Mr.Nadin Mr.Bagnall Mr.Hulley Mr.Southern Mr.Burton | ||
