car as 27-EX and our standard Continental, and we unanimously came to the conclusion that, whilst this difference is definitely to be found, it is not sufficient to justify the general upset which is inevitably caused by a big change of practice such as would be involved, especially having regard to the hope and probability that an RR. designed carburetter should be available in a few months' time, which it is expected will give a performance not more than 10% less good than that of the S.U. carburetter.

How much faster 27-EX was over the standard Phantom II Continental model was obviously gauged by us in comparison with our standard trials car as stated.

PN{Mr Northey} reports that yesterday when at W. 27-EX appeared to leave the new Continental Trials car - 60-JS{Mr Johnson's Secretary} - behind altogether more easily than we should have expected from our tests made in London and Brooklands, but of course wemust be guided by these latter tests.

We fully appreciate that at this stage in the development of our present standard Continental Phantom II it would be wrong to expect any revolutionary improvement in performance, and that a top speed gain of 5 or 6 m.p.h. would probably gradually be improved upon, but for the reasons given above, and keeping in view the statement at the end of your memo. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/AD23.2.32 to the effect that you anticipate the R.R. carburetter now being/tested would become standard on all types, we think we should concentrate all our energies on getting our new carburetter right for our purpose.
