PHANTOM II STEERING.

We carried out most careful tests on the first Phantom II car in France, to determine the best pivot lean. We found that this was 2½° and experimentally we have no difficulty in working to plus or minus ¼°. We find that toe-in ¼” gives the best results.

The cross-steering tube poundage required always varies slightly with the life of the car and the condition of the worm and nut.

We consider, however, that the best way to deal with this matter is for Depots to be informed as to the fact that steerings grow lighter in service and in consequence they may have to increase the poundage on the cross-steering tube in case of complaints of steering shocks. This has already been done and it is being mentioned in a further depot sheet.

We do not see that it is possible to ask the Test to pass steerings off that are unnecessarily heavy in order to cater for wear and tear.
