- 2 - are being made in 5% case hardening nickel steel, the shaft being hardened on the surfaces where the roller bearings work. We are not issuing this scheme for production. We are relying on the original scheme defined under heading 1. and we propose to carry on with that scheme until you are able to clearly define the arrangement which would take the place of same. Obviously, you may call for a different lead of screw in the final arrangement, and wish to modify certain parts shown in the design in N.Scheme 1981 slightly, in view of the lead screw experiments you have in hand. There is one point in connection with N.Scheme 1981 which I have written to Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} about, and it is possibly right to mention in this connection, namely, that owing to the new design of box it has been necessary to alter the dimension from the centre of the car to the centre of the steering column from 10.500 we are at present working to on production, to 10.250 as shown on N.Scheme 1981, and therefore it will not be possible to take out one of the columns we are now using on production, and replace it with the proposed new column shown on N.Scheme 1981.
