vehicle.

1. Smoothness of engagement, due to gradual action described in §2.

2. Elimination of the risk of "missing gears" or breakages due to changing gear carelessly.

3. Minimum of wear, owing to even distribution of stresses: every generator of every roller and every meridian of the two conoidal surfaces being, on the average, equally brought into play by a large number of "clutchings".

4. Interchangeability of parts for right and left hand drives, the difference between these being due solely to the manner in which the rollers are put in.

5. Reduction of strain on driver, owing to greater ease in changing gears.

6. Introduction of the advantages of "free-wheel" action in a motor driven machine.
