- 4 - Exhaust cut-out. New exhaust cut-out operation to N.S. 2012/13. We have not had any sticking of cut-out, or rattles. It has functioned O.K. & is still in good condition. The levers & rods appear to be a satisfactory proposition. Exhaust snout & swan neck. The exhaust snout aperture started to open out early in the test, & has gradually increased during the continuation. As reported, this was due to the welding of the ties having given way. The bolt holding swan neck to frame became loose & was lost. The pipe remains in good condition. Magneto & dynamo drive. to L.O.C.E. 73297. Control spring fitted to mag. to L.E.C. 1927. The mag. drive is in a very good condition. The fabrics do not shew any signs of deterioration. The impulses from mag. felt on controls fitted to steering column are considerably reduced by the fitting of the control spring. We are also of the opinion that it is helpful in reducing wear at control joints, & assists in quietening the mag. noise. Its disadvantage is that the oil relay system has a greater load to overcome, & tends to make the automatic advance sluggish. The mag. from examination is in a very good condition. It has functioned O.K. & it has not been necessary to adjust the contact points during the whole of the test. The points are still good. A slight amount of carbon dust was found behind the contact rotor. From a noise point of view, we consider the mag. to be normal. Suspensions of engine. The front & rear suspensions of engine have not shewn any weaknesses. All bolts have remained secure, & tubes, brackets & central support are all in good condition from outside examination. Autovac. We have had no trouble with this throughout the test. The filter has been examined twice, & on each occasion a very small piece of fluff was found to be adhering to same. (We may state here that the petrol has not been filtered in any way.) On a long run the tank becomes very hot, but no detrimental effects have been noticed through this. The tank & supports are O.K. Fan bracket, fan & fan belt. The fan has given no trouble. The fan belt is in quite good condition & has not stretched abnormally. It has not been necessary to remove any links. The fan bracket & bearings are still in good condition. Slipper wheel & spring drive. Dowelled slipper flywheel to L.E.C. 2131, otherwise to L.O.P. E.71202. We took the opportunity whilst bottom half was down, to remove gearcase cover, & to examine the slipper wheel, etc. We found that the slipper wheel took more than the normal load to overcome the friction. Upon examination, it was found to be on the dry side on faces of Bakerlite rings, & had become slightly grooved. | ||
