Dear Sirs, Yours dated Jan 5th. Bakelite Fabric Gear Blanks. The modified form of the Fabric moulded portion would be quite satisfactory to us though No SCD312 could be slightly dished on the front side with a slightly narrower webb. This would mean that the rim thickness of the metal insert would be less. - See our alteration in red ink. Tooth form on Metal Insert. We consider that the die cast aluminium would have a higher tensile and shear stress than the Bakelite Fabric and that, therefore, form A would be quite satisfactory. From the point of moulding : A, B or C would suit us equally. The one objection we can see is that it is probable some of the teeth on the aluminium centre might crack during the closing of the mould (pressure about 2 tons per square inch) unless a fairly ductile quality was used. On some of our mouldings which have a steel insert with similar teeth, these teeth are often bent. We have marked in red ink where we think the teeth might be strengthened. Yours truly, Attwater & Sons. Messrs Rolls Royce Ltd., DERBY. | ||
