X.3451. We have had trouble for some time with rotting away of the Filter gauge in the petrol tank, due to acids in the petrol supplied over here. Even the inner surface of the petrol pipes appears to corrode and the resulting scale washes down into the carburetter. We understand from Mr. Caswell that cases have occurred where this scale has caused trouble with the float needle or jets, and he has to renew the filter gauges in the petrol tank every six months. This was mentioned to Mr. Royce when I was over and I believe that the new design of petrol tank aims to avoid this trouble by having the entering strainer above the level of petrol in the tank, and by placing a small filter close to the carburetter. Will you please advise us whether this is so and whether the new petrol tank and small petrol filter designs are ready for us, as we need these most urgently.
