1175 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/JH. 28th. November, 1939. V.W.Pilkington, Esq., Leyland Motors Ltd., Leyland, LANCS. Dear Mr. Pilkington, I remember discussing with you at Leyland the problem of lubricating the 3rd. speed driven gear. On our production cars we have always used bronze bushes floating both on the shaft and inside the gear. We tried on Experimental Cars for a very large mileage hard steel bushes and after one or two cases of seizure had to give this up. We believe you have had almost exactly similar experiences but that you overcame the trouble by running a loose gear on top of the shaft splines. We should be very grateful if you could let us know whether this was really the case and whether any other tricks were necessary such as copper plating the shaft or the bore of the gear. How did you manage to lubricate the end thrust faces? Apologies for asking you such questions in War time. Yours sincerely, | ||
