Pilee SwDL{Len H. Swindell} 1245 To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} Derby. C. to Sr. Nice. Sr. is absent Levallois VA5/ET.31.12.36 Re; CHASSIS B.60.GA - PARIS TRIALS CAR (B4/14) 10.000 miles running on standard white metal main bearings. We confirm having telephoned to you yesterday after-noon, informing you that the above car had completed its 10.000 miles of running on standard white metal bearings and that, upon examination of the lower halves of the main bearings, we found that the lower half of N°3 bearing was in a very poor condition and not fit for further service. We proposed that, providing the upper halves of the front, central and rear bearings were also in good condition, we should fit new intermediate bearings of the same material, but before fitting them we should modify the oil grooves by making them continuous and increasing the diameter of the grooves to 2.300" diameter by .100 wide, as per instructions on page 2 of your memo of the 8th instant re "bearings". We also proposed drilling an extra hole in each main journal of the crankshaft. Since we telephoned to you, we have received your wire reading: ALLEN DO NOT DRILL CRANKSHAFT OR ALTER GROOVES IN WHITEMETAL INTERMEDIATE BEARINGS GRYLLS ROYCAR. I spoke to Sr. on the telephone this morning and informed him about the condition of the bearings and stated that, in view of the car being needed for the Brussels Motor Show about the 7th or 8th of next month, we should have to complete all necessary repairs as rapidly as possible. Sr. asked me to telephone to you again upon the matter. The following is the position concerning the Brussels Show: The car should, if possible, be in Brussels about the 7th or 8th of next month. This leaves us only about 5 or 6 working days in which to complete our work (to-morrow is a general holiday in France). Certain repairs to the coachwork also have to be carried out. | ||
