Bentley - Steering Pendulum Lever and Side Steering Tube Rear Joint.

In conjunction with N.Sch.4797 sent to you under separate cover, we have produced N.Sch.4800 showing modifications to the side steering tube rear end and pendulum lever to deal with criticisms concerning the erecting difficulties as described by RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Hollingsworth.

We show two schemes, the one in the bottom right hand corner deals with a modification to the existing design to give greater engagement between the flats on the ball pin and the locating washer, by increasing the latter and lengthening the ball pin, the lever forging and machining being unchanged. This design is to be used with a leather gaiter.

The other design shows a final scheme for the pendulum lever and the joint having a metal water-excluder.

With respect to the lever we have deleted the sweated in oil tube at the lower end, and replaced the junction by means of an olive joint in order to avoid the necessity of bending the pipe when removing the pendulum lever. The top end has been modified on the lines of Phantom III to avoid leading the oil into the cavity of the splines from which a leak is experienced.

The steering joint itself is unmodified, but the ball pin is lengthened and is the same as the ball pin for the metal water-excluder for the front end of the side steering tube and the cross steering tube.
