'USA8 4-SPEED GEARBOX.
We have not yet definitely overcome the trouble with the 1st. and 2nd. speed gears working out when using the correct springs on the plungers on the selector rods.
We had one case of the 2nd. speed gear working out.
We tried the effect of relieving the fork, but we found that this made no improvement.
We have also tried removing the keys in the centre of the two pinions. The keys were then only under the teeth of the 1st. and 2nd. speed gear wheels. We found that we still had the gear working out when this was fitted.
The 1st. and 2nd. speed gears do not work out as quickly as the reverse do. In some cases it takes two or three minutes running before the gear completely works out. There would therefore be a risk of the gear teeth being badly damaged by running half in gear.
We had one case in which the 1st. speed worked out. The gearbox was dismantled and re-erected again with exactly the same gear. We then ran it for one hour without the gear working out. This rather goes to prove that under the conditions existing in the box, slight variations in fitting may cause the gears to work out.
