Dear Mr. Armstrong,

Thank you for your letter dated 1st January, ref. GA.VS.{J. Vickers}13, concerning the 1 1/4" dia. Pistons for Shock Absorbers. We quite agree that it will probably be best if we return the shock absorbers to you in order that piston rings may be fitted.

We have carefully checked over the diameters of the bores of the cylinders and the diameters of the pistons, and find there is very nearly exactly .002" clearance in the bore. This is apparently far too much in our case but we rather feel that you should be able to produce pistons with a closer fit without having to use rings on the pistons.

I am sending your letter to our Mr. Hardy in the Experimental Department who is now dealing with these shock absorbers and will get in touch with you further and also return the shock absorbers to you.

Altough we think we could manage with less stroke in the shock absorbers in order to allow you to fit longer pistons, Mr. Hardy quite rightly points out that it is very doubtful whether this would be beneficial. This is because the smaller stroke obviously requires a longer lever for the same wheel movement, thus increasing the pressure inside the shock absorber.

Yours sincerely,
