COPY. X5230 BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} From Sft.{Mr Swift} c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} SFT.{Mr Swift}4/B.8.4.30. X.4429. X.7230. X.5230. EXHAUST VALVES. With reference to memo BY16/N7.4.30. instructing us that we should revert to S.L.V. steel in place of H.R. Crown steel for exhaust valves on both types of cars, please note we can introduce the exhaust valve of S.L.V. in three weeks time on Phantom II, and in four weeks time on the 20/25 HP. I must point out however, that this will involve scrap as follows :- E.79737. Phantom II Valves in H.R. crown steel fully machined and part machined...........£135. E.53559. 20/25HP. Valves in H.R. crown steel full machined and part machined..................................£201. Total of.....£336. In addition to which, I understand, there are in stock some lengths of 1" and 1-3/8" bar, representing steel of approximately £550 value. In the meantime we have immediately stopped work on the H.R. crown and are pushing on as quickly as possible the production of valves from S.L.V. steel in accordance with instructions contained in your memo.
