1181 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}6/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 24th March, 1937. Messrs. H.P. Trist & Co., Top Dog Works, Brislington, BRISTOL. Dear Sirs, MOTOR BRAKE LININGS. With reference to the visit of Mr. Draper to these Works, we are looking for a brake lining which has the characteristic that under all circumstances, especially when hot, the coefficient of friction falls as the rubbing speed falls. This characteristic must not be very marked. Most friction linings we know have the opposite characteristic, but some lead impregnated linings have the characteristic we require, only they lose it under certain conditions. The characteristic we want must not be confused with a fall of µ due to temperature rise which in a single brake application occurs as the rubbing speed falls. We prefer µ not to vary with temperature. If you have any information on the subject we shall be glad to hear from you. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
