20/25 HP. GEARBOX SUPPORT.

We have received your telegram saying that the clearance of the tube with the brake rods is not practical from a production point of view.

The object of using the 2" tube originally was to make a rapid experiment while we were in Derby with existing pieces including an existing flange. This, however, did not materialise and since you say it does not permit of practical clearances we suggest that we should use a smaller tube, 1.750 in dia. The static stress is in the neighbourhood of 9000 lbs. per sq. in. so that the engine load can be magnified 4 or 5 times without risk.

We send herewith N.Sch.3129, shewing the suggestion, from which it will be seen that the foot brake rods have your desired .250" clearance at least.

With reference to your suggestion to carry the tube below the Universal Joint, we do not object to this, but we should have thought that it would have interfered with taking down the gearbox. Possibly you would give us further information on this point. Perhaps the tube interferes with this in any position in which we are likely to want it.

We have indicated in one corner the 2" tube passing under the Universal Joint.
