To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/W.Bell. 5.5.33. GALLAY "HERCULE" THERMOSTAT. Tests were taken to find the loads required to maintain the plunger at its initial position with increasing and decreasing temperature, also the loads required to retain the plunger .425" (the maximum movement of the standard calorstat E.80893) from its initial position. The temperature of initial rise was 50°C. INITIAL PLUNGER POSITION. Temp. °C. Load - Lb. Increasing Temp. Decreasing Temp. 50 0 40 60 180 210 70 290 300 80 330 350 90 370 - PLUNGER .425" FROM INITIAL POS. Temp °C Load - Lb. Increasing Temp. Decrease-ing Temp. 65 0 0 70 45 30 80 90 85 90 120 125 100 155 - Although possessing a high expansion force, it had a low contraction force, i.e. above 50°C it would support a heavy load, but below 50°C the load required to extend the plunger was comparatively light, as shown by the following table wherein the loads required to extend the plunger up to .100" at 30° & 40°C are recorded.
