Your Ref Our Ref TCS/DR July 16/34. J.C.Bowering Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. file Dear Mr. Bowering, I thank you for your letter of the 14th inst. and I quite expected your decision in this matter. As a matter of fact, so far as we can make out we have been having batches of the incorrect core material since January, but we have no means of ascertaining which is the right material and which is the 3% Nickel, therefore all pumps manufactured since January are suspect. When we first started to get trouble with production pumps we were quite at a loss to understand it, and suspected everything but the bad core material. As we could find nothing wrong we set about redesigning the diaphragm and armature, and the new type so far as we know, and we have been experimenting for some considerable time, makes the pump very much more efficient as regards the electrical pull, and on the face of it even a pump with a bad core appears to be perfectly satisfactorily. In view of the fact that every pump you have is suspect, it would take a considerable period to replace all these instruments, and although we are perfectly willing to do so there may possibly be breakdowns in the meantime.
