BODY SUB-FRAMES.

We understand that the present proposition is to not consider the introduction of the underframe suspension for the body until series 'W'.

The drawings we have sent you, namely :-

N.sch. 1864 - Body sub frame layout.
N.sch. 1865 - Body sub-frame suspension and cross tubes.
N.sch. 1867 - Modifications to step irons.
N.sch. 1869 - Heelboard cross member with sub frame.

are all correct except that they should be applied to a 40/50 are-all frame 36" wide with the rear joggle moved back 1" from its present standard position, namely, to the position shewn on N.sch. 1869.

We send herewith Nsch. 1866 shewing the method of scuttle isolation and the mounting of the sloping floorboards. We are awaiting experimental data in order to definitely fix up some of the details. We wish to use 2 rubber washered bolts one on either side of the top bonnet hinge and close together, and if possible no other connection to the dashboard should be made. We are hoping that this frame will not evince that rather excessive movement between the bottom of the scuttle and the dashboard due to its better forward support, and we have shewn no connection here. If however this does take place and we wish to steady the base of the scuttle, we propose to insert a rubber block between the dashbracket and the wood of the vertical scuttle rail.

The floorboards are all carried on the sub. frame. This method we wish to experiment with and only go back to that used on GF.68, if we cannot make a success of this. The underside of the floorboards are of Goshawk type and exactly those which you produced for EAC.2. The sub-frame would be sent out with the floorboards supplied by RR., namely, those extending back to the first cross member in position. The boards should be all framed and gas-tight. Will Derby please fix up the riveting of the water gutter round the dashboard to suit existing conditions.

This completes the information necessary to enable you to produce 3 sub frames, the first of which would be sent to Hoopers, Kings Rd., Chelsea, where a body is awaiting its fitting (enclosed limousine).

Although the underframe is to be a feature of 'W' series to enable us to carry on our experiments we suggest that a 40/50 be fitted with a 'We' series dashboard so that it can be used for the experiments. Later on a 'V' series chassis could be similarly treated and used. The next job will be to send you the slight modification to the brake and bearing to P.T.
