BENTLEY TANK FILLER AND VENT PIPE.
--------------------------

We are waiting to hear from By the amount by which the petrol tank filler on the side of the tank could be shortened if we had a sealed filler cap and a long vent pipe from the tank taken up through the boot in the body. We are receiving from By a Quarter Scale Drawing showing the three possible types of filler:-

(1) The filler as at present.

(2) The filler on the outside of the tank, without a sealed cap.

(3) The filler on the side of the tank with a sealed cap.

On receipt of this sketch we hope to get a decision from Sales as to which they prefer; in any case, whether the inside or outside filler be chosen, one is rather forced to the opinion that a sealed filler cap with the long copper vent pipe, such as was fitted to the car for LMS, would appear to have the least number of disadvantages. With the inside filler, it would prevent fumes in the body; with the outside filler, it reduces the filler by several inches. The disadvantage that has been raised, namely, that the Coachbuilder might not correctly arrange the pipe in the body, we think is not very serious and is also a thing that can be easily remedied if found wrong when the car goes on test. It would be much easier to remedy this trouble than it is now to remedy a complaint of petrol fumes. We feel that such a venting system would be an advantage also on the Rolls-Royce cars.
