40/50 BUMPER FRONT SHOCK DAMPERS.

These should have the following specification -

Nearside.

(i) Thick intermediate lever.
(ii) Solid bolt.
(iii) No key in intermediate lever.
(iv) Asbestos tallow gland.
(v) Valve spring F.100806. 550 lbs. rating.
(vi) Valve raised .010" off taper seat by washer.
(vii) Head washer used to prevent oil leaking from lower stud in valve chamber.
(viii) Static load to be 120 lbs.

Offside.

This should be the same as the nearside except :-

(i) Reduced intermediate lever.
(iv) Asbestos beeswax gland.

These dampers are to be run on the bumper for 3 hrs. to allow oil level to settle. During this time short tests should be done with the dampers whitened without cooling water, so as to trace any bad oil leaks.

The dampers should then be run for a further 50 hrs. During this time no alteration, nor topping up of oil, should be done unless it is necessary. At the end of each day or night run a note should be made in the log book as to the efficiency of each damper.

At the end of the 50 hrs. the loss of oil in the dampers should be measured. The dampers should then be handed to W.Bell for dismantling and examination. Any failure in the dampers must then be recorded in the Bumper log book.
