20-HP.Car Tool Box Clearance.
--------------------------

Re. your memo EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}2/H6.4.23 and Mr. Wright's report including "tool box should not project below the surface of the running board".

We have recently written W.W. asking for a limit dimension to be given on Coachbuilders' drawing shewing how much tool box may hang below the running board. We suggested 3 1/2" as a figure which would not give less clearance than flywheel guard.

It would be difficult to prevent tool boxes coming some distance below the running boards because we are practically limited to running board tool boxes on many types of cars and such boxes must be sunk in the board in order to comply with the prevailing fashion which demands a clear flat upper surface of same, i.e. no separate boxes standing on top of the running board.

In this connection, we had suggested, for consideration that the 20-HP and future cars would have shorter step brackets with advantage so that the running board could be high enough to allow a roomy box let into them. The Coachbuilders seem to be of the opinion that all R.R.running boards can be 2" or 3" higher without making entrance appreciably more awkward than at present. They have checked this opinion on many occasions when running boards have been raised on blocks to suit customers special orders.
