Re: CHASSIS 3.CM.83 - Mrs. James CORRIGAN.

The above car was brought to us, on 18.5.38, by Mrs. Corrigan's driver, in order that we should attend to the steering which had developed excessive slackness in the column. The car had then covered 3,783 miles. Please refer to Owner's Complaint Report N° P.78.

The car was again brought to us on the 7th instant, for a repetition of the same trouble. The car had then covered a total mileage of 14,226 miles, or 10,443 miles since we last attended to the steering column.

In order to get the car on the road again as quickly as possible, we fitted another steering column. Upon dismantling the one removed from the car, we found the trouble to be due to the failure of one of the F.87130 (latest type) cam bearing race and the corresponding roller bearing as fitted to the follower roller; this also caused damage to the roller path of the follower roller.

This is the first case we have had of a failure of the latest type (greater depth of case) cam bearing race. The one that failed was the one near the nut of the F.87135 bolt of the roller race.

The driver informed us that the car is used mostly for town work. The driver has specially requested that we do not communicate with Mrs. Corrigan concerning the above, because she is not aware that we have attended to the steering.

Please let us know if we are to return the faulty parts to you for examination.

Sr/VA.
