To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Smth.9/KW.7.8.35. Weights of Car Engines. We have analysed the weights of our car engines and have arrived at the following conclusions. All weights are less flywheel, clutch, dynamo and starter motor. (1) Aluminium versus C.I. Construction. For a 6 cyl. 3.5 x 4.5 engine, the weights would be :- Bentley construction (C.I.head) Nett Wt. 410 Gross Wt. 587 " (Alum. head) 370 547 Alum. construction as J-III 310 487 The gross weight includes the weights of the following components :- Exhaust Manifold 7 lbs. Flywheel & Clutch 90 " Starter motor 21 " Dynamo 31 " Oil (1¼ gals.) 15 " Water (say 1½ gals.) 13 " 177 lbs. The aluminium engine would be about 1¼" longer than the other. We should expect SpectreCodename for Phantom III to weigh 20% more if C.I. blocks were fitted. | ||
