BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to BJ. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X. 8040 E2/M28.11.27. STIFFENER FOR PISTON LeC.2476 We send herewith LeC.2493 shewing the above. This stiffener should enable you to alter the set of pistons made to LeC.2476 and cure them of their excessive flexibility and tendency to rattle. We are asking for the stiffeners of this pattern to be in ordinary steel so that they maintain the diameter of the piston when the engine cools.down. You may find however that on the sports Phantom with alum. blocks and steel liners a stiffener in 'Staybright' steel might be more suitable, as this steel has a co-efficient of expansion we understand of about .000016.
