Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/Thn6/Hl2.8.24, (Item No.2), in investigating this matter further, the Experimental Dept. have pointed out the necessity of avoiding end play in this drive. They also point out that this end play should not develope with running, which has so far been our experience. In going into this matter, we find in examining engines on test that the contact between the collar on the shaft E19472 and the end of the bush E19467 is practically a line contact only, the bore of the bush at this point having been very much radiused. The end surface of the bush also the surface of the collar were in a rough condition, as demonstrated to Mr. Turner this morning. We do not see any need for this radius, and so far as we can make out from the drawings, there should be no radius at all. We shall be glad, therefore, if you will please go into this matter and arrange that all engines are inspected for this point, and if not satisfaotory in this respect they should be corrected. We consider this matter of sufficient importance that if necessary the bushes will probably have to be replaced. In the meantime, we trust that every attention is being given experimentally as to some improvement in the spring drive or damping device whereby the tendency for this shaft to move in position can be eliminated.
