X6079 BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} C.Wop. C.HD.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} C.SP.{Mr Spinney} C.FM. C.EFC. EJEL/EG. 20.2.31. Chassis 70. XJ. Starter Motor failure. X.6079.. We have examined both Starter Motor and Auto Switch on this chassis. The Starter Motor contact points on the trigger switch could not make contact because they were separated by a thick layer of sand and oil. A heavy deposit of this material was also found inside the cover. Auto switch failure. X.6080. This switch had been taken down by someone outside the works, and had been assembled again wrongly, so that it was impossible for it to work correctly. Personally I think the Starter Motor failed in the first place due to the deposit of sand mentioned above, and instead of cleaning the points they have interfered with the Auto Switch thinking something was wrong there and caused the switch to fail as well.
