SpectreCodename for Phantom III Rear Axle.

Herewith are N. Sch's 3990/3991/3995 and 3999, centre casing and gears for above.

N. Sch.3990 shews the 3.7 gear ratio, i.e. the same as Phantom, the increased engine speed being relied on to give the increased m.p.h.

N. Sch.3991 shews a 3.545 ratio.

N. Sch.3995 shews the pinion and mounting. The loads are heavy - 3262 lbs pinion thrust, with 2100 Journal load - under the circumstances; the Hoffmann bearing with a combination of roller and balls, seems desirable in this case. The thrust capacity is adequate, but the journal bearing is nearly 100% overloaded as a ball bearing.

No doubt a double ball bearing of the Ransome and Marles type could be tried.

N. Sch.3999 shews the proposed improved filling and levelling arrangements which have been done in consultation with Experimental Garage.

In other respects, the casings, side plates, etc. are as J.3.
