Bijur Centralised Lubrication

Worll/T30.6.32 - Following SFT{Mr Swift}'s recent discussions it is noted you are fully in accord with his proposal to manufacture same in these Shops. I think, however, it is wise to put on record the following facts:

(1) Under existing arrangements with the Lucas Company, the Tanks themselves are manufactured in these Shops and the Drip Plugs bought from Messrs. Luvax.

(2) We are paying them a figure of 7/6d per Chassis as Licence, of which sum 5/- to 6/- (I believe the actual amount is 5/5d) is paid back to the original licensees in U.S.A., i.e., Bijur Limited.

(3) Messrs. Lucas' Licence from Bijur, U.S.A covered the manufacture outright of the system in their works, and we had some difficulty when concluding arrangements with Messrs. Lucas in obtaining permission to make the Tanks themselves in these Works.

(4) It is just possible Bijur Limited U.S.A may raise objections to the Drip Plugs being made outside the Lucas organisation.

(5) It is probable, should we proceed with manufacture of the Drip Plugs in these Works, Messrs. Lucas will wish to increase the Licence figure of 7/6d, and so recompense themselves for the loss of profit they will incur through non-supply of these Plugs.

(6) Under existing arrangements Messrs. Lucas have undertaken to service all Rolls-Royce chassis fitted with such System as far as Drip Plugs are concerned, and in the remote possibility of trouble being experienced in such System due to faulty workmanship or material in the Tanks or pipes, to correct same should the Chassis be in their Service Depot and then adjust matters with us at a later date. (Personally I have heard of no cases falling under the latter heading.)

In view of the foregoing, possibly you will wish to raise the question further before we actually commit ourselves to manufacture of the Plugs here. i.e., shall I sound Messrs. Lucas on the attitude they would adopt should we go ahead with the proposal, or do you wish this to go through Claremont Haynes or Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}?
