To R.R. of America Inc. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} -3- RB{R. Bowen}/G12/7/21 Contd. the carburettor and throttle (which our tests shew definitely beneficial) that can be obtained with water. Any slight increase of temperature around the throttle is of the utmost importance to the distribution of the gasoline. EXHAUST HEATED THROTTLE AND EXHAUST CHOKE+ We have at present on the road two or three modifications of heating the throttle by the exhaust gases, and one of the combination of butterfly valve in the rear exhaust pipe, as shewn on the complete drawing sent herewith, which is undoubtedly the best thing we have done, the temperature of the throttle being distinctly higher than with water, and the effect on the distribution most marked. LOUVRES. X3456 It will be remembered that we do not think the Galliator is sufficiently well worked out and reliable apparatus to put on a R.R. car, and prefer that you fit at present the hand controlled louvres and thermometer. This has the doubtful advantage of being able to use alcohol in winter if you wish, which would not be possible with any thermostat control unless the thermostat were set for very low temperature. We do not know whether you still wish to use alcohol, but if you do, it would be necessary to either arrange for a low temperature thermostat control or to make the hand operated louvre a permanent fitting. Personally, I like the thermostat operated direct on the shutters and the circulating water direct on the thermostat. Perhaps you would tell us what temperature it would be necessary to set the thermostat to operate if alcohol were used. There is one advantage in heating the throttle by exhaust gas, and that is, when using alcohol the throttle can be equally as hot as it could be if water were used only (Contd | ||
