On Monday the 30th June, that Engines were lifted out of the boat and sent to the Rolls-Royce works at Derby to be completely dismantled and ascertained for internal examination. Notwithstanding the fortnights immersion in water and mud, all parts were intact and in excellent condition with the exception of the Carburetter floats which were crushed. As is well known, the floats contain air and are sealed, are made buoyant by sealed air inside a thin casing. The external pressure of the head of water had crushed these as the boat sank would crush the floats long before the boat reached the 200 ft. depth. The Engines can be assembled immediately, after cleaning the parts of water and oil, and will run as perfectly as they did before the accident, the only replacement being new carburetter floats. | ||
