OUR REF. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}7/KT ATE/S/38645. BRIDGE WORKS, OLD SHOREHAM, Sussex. 30th November, 1933. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Mr. Robotham, Mr. Ricardo has asked me to reply to your letter of the 29th inst. and to forward you the attached curves, which shew mean optimum ignition advance, which we have found from tests on a number of different engines. The ignition advance shewn gives a pressure rise of 30 lbs. per sq. inch per degree crankshaft angle, and in Mr. Ricardo's view should apply to the side-valve exhaust overhead inlet type of head which you have in mind. You will see that the graphs are plotted one against speed and the other against compression ratio at a constant engine speed. If there is any further information you require, will you please let us know. Yours sincerely, A.{Mr Adams} T. Evans. Enclo. Drwg. D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} 4212 (2 off).
