Stopping servo squeaking and a proposal to test a Phantom front axle on an S.S. chassis to improve steering.

woven cotton. We find, as you know, that when we completely
set the cotton lining with oil the efficiency drops
tremendously. We should like you to see whether you can
stop the servo squeaking when reducing the efficiency by
judicious application of paraffin or a mixture of paraffin
and oil.

(3) Front axle.
We have confirmed on 20-EX the results that
we got on 22-EX. Briefly the results are that if we fit
a Phantom front axle to the S.S. we at once vastly improve
the S.S. steering. The great advantage of this is that we
can then use a more flexible engine mounting. Previously
the S.S. steering was so bad that we were obliged to hold
the engine rigidly in the frame to prevent radiator jellying.
We are therefore proposing to go back to the Phantom front
axle on the S.S. but before we do so we should like to have
confirmation of our results from you. Therefore, will you
please arrange to get an all round impression of 21-EX
steering in its present form after you have obtained what you
consider to be the best compromise with the side steering
tube and cross steering tube and then take the car to Sevres
and get the front axle changed. You can probably arrange
with Ps. to put the car in an out-of-the-way corner in the
shop and throw a sheet over it, and he could probably arrange
that the Watchman prevents anyone from examining it.

We consider this axle test to be of vital
importance because we have got to stop
