25HP. EXHAUST MANIFOLD.

We have a sample of the above handed to us by GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}, which has broken at the usual place after 3000 miles in France.
The break has started on the inside of the bend near the rear end, and the section shews that the wall is thin at the point where the fracture started, but not perhaps more than the vari-ation one would naturally expect with a casting of this type.
This pipe has run further than those which have hitherto failed and represents an improved result.
There are one or two moves which suggest themselves to overcome this trouble:
(1) Further increase in thickness of walls in the locality where breakage occurs.
(2) Change of material -
(a) Could not this pipe be made in malleable?
(b) Would the use of nickel cast iron improve the strength when hot?
Could you deal with point (1) or would you like us to send you a sketch. We should like to know your views as regards point (2).
